When a Sydney-based contractor approached Fox Global with an issue involving their vacuum truck struggling to move 6-inch sludge over a long pull, our team quickly devised a custom-engineered solution to improve flow efficiency and reduce vacuum loading. Using principles based on the Venturi effect, we created an air-assisted vacuum booster that significantly improved the system’s performance.
The Challenge: Sludge Transfer Over a Long Pull
The contractor’s vacuum truck was assigned to extract thick sludge through a 6” hose over a long horizontal distance. However, the system was bogging down under the heavy material load, leading to reduced suction efficiency, blockages, and slow job progress.
Heavy sludge presents unique challenges due to its:
- High viscosity and density
- Tendency to settle or compact in the hose
- Increased resistance over long runs, especially in horizontal configurations
The Venturi Concept in Vacuum Systems
To solve the issue, Fox Global applied Venturi effect principles, a well-known phenomenon in fluid dynamics. The Venturi effect states that when a fluid (or gas) flows through a constricted section of pipe, its velocity increases and its pressure decreases. This pressure differential can be exploited to induce or assist fluid movement—especially effective in aiding flow within a vacuum line.
In vacuum truck applications, introducing a controlled volume of air into the suction line can:
- Reduce drag inside the hose
- Agitate and aerate thick sludge, making it easier to move
- Create a “slug flow” or “piston effect”, where pockets of air help push the sludge along
- Prevent compaction and hose collapse
This technique is particularly useful during long pulls or horizontal runs, where dense materials tend to settle and clog lines.
The Custom Fox Global Solution
To implement this concept on-site, Fox Global engineered a fast, practical solution using standard components and expert fabrication. Here’s how we did it:
- 🔩 Welded a Male & Female Travis Fitting Together
- Created a robust inline 6” joiner compatible with the vacuum truck’s existing hose system.
- 🔧 Added a Welded Tee Port on the Side of the Joiner
- Installed a tee entry mid-section to allow for airflow introduction.
- 🔘 Installed a Ball Valve on the Tee Port
- Enabled controlled air entry into the vacuum line at the operator’s discretion.
- ⚙️ Positioned the Joiner Midway on the Vacuum Line
- Placed the air injection point for optimal turbulence and flow encouragement.
This simple yet highly effective mod converted a struggling vacuum setup into a more dynamic, self-clearing system—dramatically improving suction performance.

- Air creates flow separation: The injected air helps separate the sludge from the internal hose walls, reducing friction and making the material easier to move.
- Creates a partial Venturi assist: While not a traditional Venturi nozzle, the result mimics one—lowering pressure and increasing flow speed at the point of air entry.
- Breaks up blockages: Air pockets help fragment compacted sludge, especially in flat hose runs.
This solution is cost-effective, field-serviceable, and ideal for crews working with vacuum trucks, hydro excavation, or drain cleaning under tough conditions.
